Why Men Project

Why don't men teach kindergarten?

Why Don't Men — Understanding why men don't do certain things.

See if this sounds familiar…

Walk into an early childhood center or kindergarten hallway, and you will see female teachers in almost every classroom. Men are noticeably absent from the formative early years of education.

Systemic factors—including lower compensation for early education, lingering societal suspicion toward men in care taking roles with young children, and lack of male mentors—discourage men from pursuing early childhood teaching careers. This deprives young children of seeing balanced male care in early spaces.

Nurturing young minds is a profound human capability, completely independent of gender.

How can our communities encourage and welcome gentle, capable men into early education spaces?
